Singing, Community & the Value of the Arts in the time of COVID19
We at the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus (HYOC) believe in Singing! We believe in the transformative power of music and music education. We are Ohana! We share ALOHA through music, melody, friendship and community. We believe that the voice contained within each person is unique and needs to be fostered, developed and guided. Singing has lifetime cognitive, physical, emotional and spiritual benefits. We believe that singing together transforms individuals and communities. The poetry and melodies contained within sung music has more value than ever to soothe, inspire and affect lives in powerful ways. Choirs, and the experience of group singing and making real connections, are powerful ways to express beauty, joy and hope!
The last 15 months have completely changed everything. In our time of COVID-19 advisories recommended "distancing", singing considered "dangerous", CDC, State and County Mandates, reveals more than ever understanding the importance, value and need for the Arts, especially the Art of Singing and the Art of Singing in Community.
HYOC is working on a path forward to continue our important work as an educational resource for our community and the keiki and `opio of Hawaii.
HYOC will offer choir, instruction and musicianship this coming season. However, due to COVID-19, government restrictions and mandates, facility access etc., our service will pivot accordingly. The staff and board of HYOC are currently developing plans to offer music this coming season. The safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and families is our utmost concern. We are developing policies and instructional plans that take into account all best practices and recommendations to make music learning and singing possible in the coming season. We thank you for your ongoing support, flexibility, tenacity, suggestions and above all ALOHA.
